Thats right. On this day in 1961, Cosmonaut
Yuri Gagarin became the first known human to enter space, when he made his famous single orbit around the globe in
Vostok-1. This year there are over 250 parties being held around this small blue marble in his honor. A fitting tribute.
Another fitting tribute is the monument recently erected, in Moscow, to
Laika, a 2-year old female dog that became the first earthling to leave the planet. Her launch was on November 3, 1957.

Finally made contact with Alissa today, after playing "telephone tag" for a few hours. She and her best friend are going to join me for dinner on Monday night. I had already made plans to take Judy & Richard out that evening, it's Judy's birthday.
We also plan to get together with her entire family so I can spend time with them and meet Nora for the first time. That date is still up-in-the-air. Wednesday is Leah's birthday.

In Los Angeles this week, two teenage girls were killed when a their participation in an armed robbery of a cabbie went sour. Their two male companions have been
arrested/jailed for capitol murder. The cabbie was hospitalized for wounds incurred in the traffic collision and for the slashings he received from a box cutter the girls were using. What a waste of a good cab. The
original story (link includes video and images) suggested that the cabbie could be charged in the girls deaths. Not bloody likely. This isn't the UK.

In an area where jobs are scarce, a
150 year old industry may be coming to an end. Ecologically, it makes sense but the folks who live in the Pacific Northwest are going to be hurt bad.

MPD was involved in a shooting incident yesterday while executing a search warrant in Makawao
(upcountry Mau'i). One person was killed and several officers were injured. Details on the web and on local TV have been rather sketchy. This is the

According to a
recent paper, the odds of the cosmos teeming with life, as we understand it, may not be as great as previously thought. In fact all life on Earth will be gone in, at least, 1 billion years. Only planets that develop sufficiently "intelligent" life and technology to migrate off-world would have a chance to spawn into the universe.
